McCain’s warning about voter fraud stokes a fiery campaign even further
By Katharine Q. Seelye Monday, October 27, 2008
[Senator John McCain warned at the last presidential debate that the Nov. 4 election could be marred by voter fraud and added that Acorn, an organizing group in minority and low-income communities, was “now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy.”…]

NYT: ACORN overstating its success at registering voters nationwide
By TRIP JENNINGS 10/24/08 11:13 AM
[ACORN, the organization at the center of an election-year controversy, overstated earlier this month how many new voters it had registered nationwide, the New York Times is reporting. The group enthusiastically claimed Oct. 6 that it had signed up 1.3 million new voters nationwide, when, in fact, the number is more accurately around 450,000, the paper reports….]

Even with this admirable accomplishment, this estimate of more than 17 million voters represents only 70% of eligible voters. The population of this state is estimated at 36.5 million. A big group is not voting. We need nationwide reform.

By Jim Sanders jsanders@sacbee.com Published: Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008
[California is set to break voter registration records in an election that could result in the nation’s first African American president or first woman vice president. The deadline for reporting pre-election registration is Friday, but preliminary counts already exceed 17 million – higher than the state’s previous best of 16.6 million, Nicole Winger, spokeswoman for the secretary of state, said Tuesday…]

9 days until Election Day.
In a stunning admission Sequoia Voting Systems has admitted to not printing and mailing over 11,000 absentee ballots to Denver, Colorado, voters. Their spokeswoman claimed they “made an unfortunate mistake.” In fact, the company had failed to notify the city of this “mistake” and when originally asked they lied and told the city they had delivered all 21,450 ballots they were supposed to print and deliver to the post office on Oct. 16. Sequoia claims they will have ballots printed and delivered to the post office by tomorrow, Monday. Voters have until Election Day to get those ballots marked and either, back in the mail or delivered to any early polling site. Not mentioned by anyone is if any overseas voters or military are affected by this failure.

ACORN hit with corruption suit in Ohio
By ED BRAYTON 10/28/08 7:24 AM [The Buckeye Institute, a public policy think tank, has filed a lawsuit claiming that ACORN has committed voter registration fraud and that this dilutes the votes of eligible voters. The lawsuit was filed in state court on behalf of two Ohio residents against ACORN, a community-based organization that advocates for low- and moderate-income families by working on issues including voter registration. One legal expert said the suit was filed for political reasons and has little chance of success, but a Buckeye Institute official disputes that claim. The lawsuit (read the full complaint here) is based on the Ohio Corrupt Activity Act, that state’s version of the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) act, which was written to go after organized crime organizations. The complaint alleges:…]

By GWYNETH DOLAND 10/28/08 10:16 AM
