June 6, 2020 What Karen Haard said: With all of the protests going on, I would like to point out some historical facts concerning privilege. Black men were allowed to vote Feb, 3, 1870 and the first black in congress was Rep Joseph Rainy in 1870. Women did not get the right to vote until August 18,1920 and the first woman in congress was Rep. Jeannette Rankin of Montana in 1917 Native Americans did not get citizenship until June 2, 1924 and even then did not get the right to vote. This was decided by individual states and the last state to grant it was Utah in 1962. The first native American in congress was Sen Hiram Revels in 1870. An additional note. Women could not have a bank account in their name until 1960 and a single woman could not borrow money without a man to cosign until 1974.
