There are quite a few lists out there, and most of them are useful.

What I want to say here is that the decision to act, to be present, is important. The decision to remain active is just as important.

To stand up and be accountable is a daily activity, but it does not mean that the level of activity will always be the same.  Self worthy persons, and, we all have worth, choose every day, even in all their small actions, how to live, in the groceries they buy,  or not, the fripperies of societal needs, the media they absorb and allow to remain unchallenged, whether they can make it to the town halls, support their libraries, write to and support their local paper.

This might mean that the economic and convenience cost of our actions are greater than it would otherwise be, as in the decision to buy or not from a big box store, or to cut the cable cord if it does not provide balanced news. Daily decisions, such as those of noted above, are best served with notice of accountability to that establishment. Tell them why you have chosen to disassociate with them.

We have been at a bipartisan war, that we could have declared officially, with other countries since 2011. We pretended that the war was a military action and never acknowledged the blood and treasure it took from our country. We never acknowledged that more than half the oil we are perpetually fighting over goes to our military. We never saw the caskets, and just barely heard the low moaning of the families of the dead.  When Michelle Obama started the White House garden, we saw the value of feeding our children fresh veggies, but not that we actually all needed victory gardens, or that we were killing our planet with excess brought to us on petroleum wheels.

This election signaled what will be a long war for the future of our country. We are already past the rhetoric and into the actions of a militant dictator. We have witnessed a five year old child handcuffed behind his back because the cuffs were too big for his wrists in the airport. We know that children are being followed by strangers in order to ascertain the homes of their mothers. We have witnessed harassment, killing and bomb threats to minorities and institutions for women. This week brought both the shut down of the NoDAPL site with most of the neutral cameras off,  and the revelation of Immigration tearing a woman out her hospital while she was waiting for a brain tumor operation and being sent to the Alvarado Detention Center, where she was handcuffed and strapped down.

Do not assume these are abarrations.

Bannon, in his address to CPAC, this week, made it quite clear that these are not, but rather the beginning of his new world order. This will not stop unless we stop it.

Which leads me to my point. I was gratified to here that there are elite geometry mathematicians working on the problem of “compactness” in gerrymandered districts, which cause us to perpetuate Republican, mostly, representatives. We desperately need a better districting formula. Folks are being trained as expert witnesses to discuss, in court, the ramifications of these findings. However, redistricting is also performed on the basis of our ten year census. The next one won’t occur until 2021. So, unless the courts find a way to invalidate the current districts now, its very probable that the same political landscape will be present in 2020; the same one that elected Trump this time. It’s more than likely that it will still be in place in 2018.

Trunp is known for rewarding the loyalists. He is also very good at knowing how to “chum” the waters. He will spend infrastructure money on those states he needs. He has already promised road money to Florida. Unless things change dramatically before 2018, expect the same states to be in play.

So, if you don’t do another thing, stand up and be accountable by voting. Around  fifty percent of you didn’t last time. Start planning how you will do it now. I know it’s very hard for some of us in our disctricts get there, or to even stay on the rolls. Some of us are harassed and suffer indignities that we we shouldn’t have to suffer. Indigenous peoples shouldn’t have to drive hundreds of miles in winter, because a Nevadan official decides she doesn’t want to provide a polling place. I don’t know what it will take, volunteer lawyers standing beside you, a new group of Red Berets, or Acorn, or  better taxi service. Maybe that includes volunteering and doing the work for your home to be a polling place.

Whatever it is that will get your vote counted; do it.

Read it well, these themes of his have endured, so we must expect to see their iteration. Always believe a person who tells who they are, especially when his actions speak so loudly. Here it is, from WAPO:

By November 1963 John Kennedy had been assassinated and Lyndon Johnson had become President. The Vietnam War was omnipresent. I was 16. The draft was on. All the boys I knew then were hyper aware of what was coming for them. ROTC was on every campus. One friend was planning on joining the Merchant Marines, but most I knew weren’t trying to jump out of the gate early and sign up. It wasn’t a declared war and fighting the “Commies” in Vietnam, just because, was a pretty hard sell. On the West coast folks felt that Kennedy had tried to moderate involvement and Johnson was upping the involvement.

I joined the high school Young Republicans. Why? Someone asked me and I was into joining groups. When you moved every two years like I did, it was a smart idea to be a joiner. Plus, I was developing opinions and ideas about what was going on around me. The war was front and center.

I remember one meeting at the school; there may have been more. However, very shortly after that there was an announcement that we were invited to a statewide meet up where we would be choosing representatives.

The meet-up was in Stockton CA. We lived in San Rafael then. Woot! An out of town event for a 16 year old, chaperoned. Four of us, shiny geeky white republicans, plus, an 18 year-old chaperone went.

We got there, I think, during the middle of the day, checked into an event motel and had a very short meeting after which we were dispersed to “caucus”. Our chaperone disappeared. So we went to a few motel rooms to meet each other. In the first room were a few people saying absolutely nothing to each other. Though they suggested we stay, we thought we should look for some actual “caucusing” so we went looking and found: drinking, and next thing, a lot of sex. It seemed like every door we opened folks were writhing on the motel beds.

So, you know, as “Young Republican” representatives, this highly unethical situation left us not knowing what to do next. The four of us decided to go across the street to the bowling alley and go bowling. It was fun; I hadn’t bowled before and none of us were really any good, but we were a good new group together. I remember, it grew strangely quiet in the alley. When we got out of the door we saw it was dark and we started back quickly to see if anyone had shown up for the proscribed motel dinner. Walking out the door, four young Hispanic men confronted us. Stockton had a high Hispanic population even in 1963. Next thing I know, for no apparent reason, one of the locals had hit one of our smallest boys in the nose. I’ll never forget that clot of blood, the size of a softball, in his hand.

Protection mode kicked in and I went into the perpetrators face and confronted him. It was scary because I had no idea what I was going to do. Fortunately, because I think, he was expecting to kick the intruding boys off his turf, and not a girl, he stepped back from me enough that we achieved a kind of stand off. We walked away and took care of our friend. It was a time long ago; no knives or guns were involved.

The next day was the final meeting with a lot of hung over barely speaking representatives who voted in somebody for something. Clearly everything was prearranged and what we had witnessed those two days was “real” Republican politics in action. We left.

I have thought about that event often; how we invaded unknowingly another’s turf in an unfamiliar town, who they must have been and grown into, how we were scolded for leaving the motel, even though we knew it was safer than the motel, how my actions possibly impacted my friends self esteem as being the only one, a girl who stood up, whether the boys were smarter, how we never really talked to each other after that, and what the heck politics was all about anyway?

By 1964 we had moved again, this time to Lake Oswego, OR. I was 17, not yet a voter. Dad was a Republican and Mom was a Democrat. I was not a Republican.

Six months later, in 1964, Hillary Clinton was 17.

I’m glad we are having this discussion, but geez, here we are with no ERA, and not equal and we are asked to decide. Is it an act of domestic terrorism or a hate crime?

IT’S BOTH!!!!#@!

http://www.vox.com/2015/12/2/9835690/poll-abortion-domestic-terrorism

HE ATTACKED A FEDERALLY FUNDED ORGANIZATION, THAT PORTION OF WHICH PROVIDES HEATH CARE TO WOMEN AND FAMILIES, BUT NOT ABORTION.

HE ATTACKED WOMEN AND THEIR SUPPORTERS, WHO DO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE AND NEEDED ABORTIONS.

THIS IS HOW WE LOSE THE WAR ON WOMEN. WE DEFLECT IT TO SOMETHING ELSE; GUNS, INSANITY, ABORTION, YADAYADAYADA.

HE IS A MISOGYNIST WHACK-A-DOODLE THUG WHO ATTACKS WOMEN, ANIMALS AND LOCKS. HIS PEOPLE KNEW HE WAS A WHACK-A-DOODLE. THE POLICE KNEW HE WAS A WHACK-A-DOODLE.

THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT RANDOM SHOOTERS, WHOSE PREDICTIVE ACTIONS ARE STOCHASTIC OR UNKNOWABLE. THEY ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT PROPERLY TRACKED.

WOMEN DESERVE THE SAME SECURITY AS THE REST OF SOCIETY, NO MATTER WHAT THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION.

What it is NOT is a simple act of murder by a deranged lone gunman.

On November 25th, the United Nation’s “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” campaign began. It will culminate on December 10th with Human Rights Day.

As has happened again this year, I just couldn’t quite get it together to set down and concentrate on a thoughtful blog, or series. Maybe it’s the depression I am avoiding. It’s not the Holidays that cause this depression. It’s the work that it takes to dig up and newly elucidate old hard, unacknowledged truths again, because for me it’s one of the most important times there is, and I always feel unequal to the task.

Women are still not equal partners in the world and its affairs. The Equal Rights Amendment has not yet passed. Women are not included as a whole in civil rights laws.

Earlier this year in September, and just this week a Planned Parenthood facility was attacked, the first by fire and the most recent, by another gun wielding misogynist. The media has zinged back and over whether the most recent attack is an act of terror or a deranged soul.

I don’t think these acts fully represent either position. They are hate crimes. (more…)

151002 – Update: Predictable and a disgusting example of the “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” alive and well.  There are now 446,000 Google hits on this garbage.

154 google hits at last count with these words:

Obama White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett threw Hillary Clinton under the bus Wednesday at the Washington Ideas Forum, where she told interviewer Andrea Mitchell that the White House gave Clinton guidance forbidding her from using private email.”

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/09/30/valerie-jarrett-throws-hillary-bus-email-scandal/

Not True. My interpretation is that Jarrett said there was guidance to turn over emails from personal servers, and that’s what Clinton is doing.

Here is the interview. You decide:

Here are the Oversight and Reform Hearing uTubes and documents. I hope they are complete, you never know with uTube:

Planned Parenthood’s Taxpayer Funding

All together, the uTubes are a few hours of listening and watching. The first part of Part 3 with Congressman Clay discusses how PP standards have been within the law and that the MO. investigation found no wrongdoing.

Yes, Planned Parenthood could probably survive without Federal Funds, but we all know this is about whether or not women, men and families would receive Medicaid service on the reduced funds.

Rep. Jackson Lee from Texas, spoke very well to the issue of mixing apples and potatoes, when it came to the loss of medical access versus abortion, and the overturning of the unconstitutional Texas Law. 25% of Texan women lost access, especially in rural areas, after July 2013.

David Daleiden, who was responsible for the edited PP videos, has been ordered to turn over the complete and raw videos for his PP sting.   According to Rep. Lee,  Daleiden may plead the 5th over his unwarranted (illegal) investigation, which was determined to provide no evidentiary basis against PP.

The House has been very busy making up new bills (See H.R.3495.)regarding women’s health care. centered around the idea that one way to reduce the impact of aPlanned Parenthood is to allow the states more latitude in determining whether they should allow federal funds to be spent on abortion providers. To be clear, federal funds already are not spent on abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the live of the mother. (Keep in mind  one point of attack has been to require proof meaning a trial or confession-something that could culminate after the birth. )

GovTrack.Us indicates that 49 abortion referenced bills have been introduced, referred to committee, and/or passed by the House THIS year. See: Abortion. That list doesn’t include H.R.3495 or H. Res. 444.

These current bills are specifically an attempt to eliminate the use of Medicaid funds by those folks who have no other way to pay for the range of health services, that PP provides. if you take Medicaid from Planned Parenthood, you prevent people on Medicaid from utilizing their range of services at 700 locations around the country. This is the worst kind of classist, sexist, racist evil.

HRC put out a “Briefing” today that includes a list of Republican candiates’ statements on Planned Parenthood:

I am struck by the irony of October being National Domestic Violence Month, and that I failed to commemorate it in this blog. I have been drawn into a neighbor’s struggle to begin her life anew due to domestic violence. Her lift to flight is occurring now and she will soar by the end of the month to a new county, and hopefully, a better life. Perhaps this is October’s best tribute. If there is anything I have learned from this experience, it is that from the outside, a person’s struggle to break free can appear to be something very different. At various times many of us in the neighborhood, including me, have thought her to be a liar, thief, drug user, public resource manipulator, and certainly, an indifferent mother. (more…)
