[Colin Powell, a Republican who was President Bush’s first secretary of state, endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president Sunday and criticized the tone of Republican John McCain’s campaign.

The former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said either candidate, both of them senators, is qualified to be commander in chief. But he said Obama is better suited to handle the nation’s economic problems as well as help improve its standing in the world….]

I live in a town with an air force base. As you might imagine, our town has a fair number of military personnel and retired military folk. Every day I drive down one of the main roads to get to my home. Along this avenue, behind the block wall fence, in one back yard, is a pair of poles sporting an American, and a POW/MIA flag. Since I moved here in 1995, those flags have been there, in resolute statement to the large mall across the way. (more…)

In the last several years the cost of farmland in Iowa has soared. Senator Harkin, in the past, has opined on the worry over whether both corn for fuel and food could be produced. Today that argument might be seen as the last rosy glow, before the financial ember was gone.  Soaring costs of farmland at the record rate below can only be seen as anticipation of an ethanol enhanced future, spurred by the recent farm bill passage. As a force to be reckoned with, the California Nurses Association (CNA) is formidable. Ask Arnold.  The organization advocates universal healthcare, based on a single payer system, and improved and expanded Medicare. These are all nicely progressive ideas with which, as a Democrat, I agree, although Obama does not.

In addition, they are actively campaigning for a similar solution: HR 676 in Congress, and SB 840 in California. (more…)
