Amber Hagerman (November 25, 1986–January 15, 1996) was a young girl who became a victim of an abduction and murder. On January 13, 1996, she was riding her bike near her grandparents’ home in Arlington, Texas, and was kidnapped soon thereafter.[1] Her murder would later inspire the creation of the AMBER Alert system.

I was a child once, sitting in a tree. I was a child of eight or ten or so, enjoying the evening view, and sitting in my tree. I thought it was a wonderful view, my tree upon a hill, I could see the L.A. basin and all the twinkling lights. It was a gorgeous, sweet, clear evening, not a speck of smog had come that day. I sat there quite a while.

A tiny plane rose up. Above, a commercial jet pierced the dancing currents. I watched and watched and began to fear. Surely it could not be? And then, it surely could. My throat rose to the yell, but I knew it could not be heard. The cartoon flash broke into sparklers and chunks, a tail this way, a fuselage that; a small sound came long after. I knew I’d seen people die. I watched as the pieces fell, praying they would land free.

As fast I could I ran to tell my mom, who at first failed to believe; but finally then, the TV confirmed 79 were dead.

Strangely, I was never afraid of airplanes. I tried my sad tree one more time, but not after that. I decided at that young age, that the tree was too fragile for my weight.

Yet, it still bore peaches.

For two weeks the debate has been furious over whether Hillary Clinton should be offered the job of Secretary of State, and then, as to whether she should accept. I found my self unable to have an opinion. I had compartmentalized my thoughts. Finally, the key to the box came last night. It’s a touchstone of my life, and has served me many times. I found I had harbored an opinion all along, but lost the vehicle for expression.

I trusted her to be president, and I trust her to make this decision. All the rest is broken, the causes were there to see.

If I want peaches, I must train my viewpoint to the tree. Then, when it is stronger,  I will have my view again.

My mother was an early follower of Adele Davis. She later became a nurse, after a first career as a stay-at-home-mom,  and is always on the lookout for news in the field. She knows the history of the FDA and events in the 50’s and 60’s. She sent me this recent article on melamine from the NYT: (more…)

Played against backdrop of Pine Ridge and the fact that SD went for Hillary, there is irony here. Does he get the staff he lent to Obama back?

Finally, the FDA, with the speed of world traveling planaria, reacts:

US to detain food shipments from China

[…Under the directive, FDA inspectors at U.S. ports of entry will detain foods from China made with milk and certain ingredients derived from milk. Importers must pay to have their products tested by an independent laboratory that meets FDA standards. Only products found to be melamine-free will be allowed into the country.

The order also applies to pet foods and some bulk protein products, the focus of a melamine recall in 2007.

Essentially, the FDA action shifts the burden of proof to Chinese companies, which must now supply evidence that their products are safe. Most consumers should not be affected, since major U.S. food manufacturers get their milk ingredients here.”The FDA should have acted sooner to ban these milk products from entering the country,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro, chairwoman of a panel that oversees the FDA budget. She urged that egg and fish products also be tested, since melamine has been added to animal feed in China.

“Clearly, the problems involving melamine in China are significantly deeper than FDA would have us believe,” DeLauro said….]

I’m thinking this was well timed, since no one is buying anything anyway.
