Solano County CA. has now confirmed the death of a six year old. A forty-year old man died recently, 80 people have been hospitalized and we have had one school dismissal. Maybe that doesn’t seem like much in a population of more than 400 thousand. Why do you want to be one of the lucky ones that got it?

Then, there is this, a now confirmed case of H1N1 in a cat. If yours aren’t feeling well, get it checked out.

Previously titled “A Marin County Ghost Story”. (what can I say; I was tired, this sounds better.)

Long ago in a faraway place called Marin County, I took a job selling Champion motor homes. My husband and I hadn’t been married that long, maybe 3 years. We had two toddlers.  Money was tight.  Because we were living in SF at the time and had only one car, my husband, who had met the man and found me this job, drove me there for what was supposed to be the first day of many, with idea I would take the bus back, a trip of at least an hour.

As many of you more savvy people might anticipate, after my husband left, the sexual innuendos began. So well ok, the guy is a jerk. It was the 70’s, free sex was all around, and I was 22. Pretty much for the entire day the sexual advances continued. I’m thinking I’ll just handle it and not come back.  The lot closed and others left, one coming to say goodbye with an odd look.

It was time for me to go and catch the bus. He blocked the entrance to the motor home I was in. He was friendly, but blocking the entrance saying it’s too far to take the bus and he is going to give me ride home. So now the question, do I attempt to push by the guy or will this get worse? The lot was dark, my husband was an hour away, it was before cell phones, and he wasn’t going to let me in the office to make a call. He was pretty insistent at this point that we should have sex.

It was all so friendly and calm, it was the 70’s and sex wasn’t a big deal, HIV/AIDS wasn’t known yet. Even so, I didn’t want to have sex with this asshole. Was it better to keep it calm and friendly or could it escalate? So I made a bargain. I gave him a blowjob. Yes, it was still sex, but I didn’t have to get naked, I didn’t have to lie down. He didn’t touch my body. I could have bitten him, and run out, but in the 70’s in Marin County, in the dark, I might not have made it anywhere whole.

Afterwards he took me home. The next day he called my husband and apologized to him, not me. ( Had he thought my husband was offering me up?) I wouldn’t talk to him. He tried to tell my husband that he had a good wife and family and didn’t know why he did this. (Meaning he did it more than once?) He wanted my husband to feel sorry for him. In thinking about it, this incident may be one reason why I prefer to drive myself places.

Today in 2009, a lot of us, including me, would handle this kind of thing differently. However, even when we do our best to protect ourselves, there are times when we just don’t recognize the pattern until it is too late.

Why am I telling what will certainly be an icky story for my granddaughter to read? The answer is that I never told my older daughter. Now, as she is beginning a sexual harassment lawsuit against her former employer, I realize I have left out some important information to pass on. We are strong women; we can survive just about anything.

However, don’t assume a sexual harasser can be managed. You shouldn’t have to. Just because you make it one day or the next doesn’t mean that if an opportunity arises a predator will refrain. After the second time you have to say no, start a journal. Complain to Human Resources. Don’t think sexual grooming happens only to children. If a sexual predator attempts to groom you and fails, don’t assume he will just leave you alone.  Expect retaliation.  The jails are full of people, mostly men, who are incredibly personable and have spent most of their years planning how to get you, and are very patient. Don’t manage, do what it takes to stop it. Whatever that is.

The Debate Room over at BusinessWeek has posted this debate topic:
Low-Income Women: Get Married

-Update-

Someone over at NewsWeek finally did publish my comment, so I am removing it here. However, it’s still worth a look to SEE what was posted in their “Debate Room” this week, suggesting that low-income women should get married as a way out of poverty.

What do you think?

More fun? with food.

Peanuts

Since February 18th the USFDA has initiated an estimated additional 118 food recalls. Of these, 109 were peanut/salmonella related reports of possible contamination in bars cheesecakes, snack, pet snacks and nuts. This would appear to bring the total peanut recalls to approximately 423. Go HERE to see the latest.

The FDA list is now so long that it is difficult to visually search. However, by doing a keyword search on the page I was able to find several items. For example, in doing a word search for “dog” I found 7 listings of pet snacks. “Just Desserts” was listed once.

Sprouts

The FDA announced that SunSprout Enterprises, Inc. recalled “Alfalfa Sprouts, Onion Sprouts, and Gourmet Sprouts” because of Salmonella in products distributed in Nebraska and Iowa.

Cheese

In related news, the US FDA has commenced a recall on Peregrina Cheese Corp for it’s Queso Fresco Fresh Cheese.

Tortillas, etc.

In addition, the US FDA has CLOSED Del Rey Tortilleria Inc. of Chicago, Il, for repeated violations and failure to correct their actions. There are however, no associated recalls.

While some continue to marvel over the odd idea that salmonella could survive in a peanutty environment, it’s clear that being hired to do “a” job is not the same as being hired to do “the” job.

The reality is that the people producing the products hire the private inspectors. State inspectors inspect to state standards, which vary depending on the finances of the state, and local antagonism to perceived bureaucracy. Only federal government can maintain uniform minimum standards. Of course, we have seen what “Starving the Beast” can do in the last 30 years. Like everything else, you get what you pay for. People, resources, and money must maintain and support those federal standards.

There is a reason that a federal inspection costs $8000, as reported, while the private inspector cost $1000. It’s not because wages are so much lower in Georgia.

Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009

In the mean time H. R. 875, entitled the “Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009” has been presented to the House of Representatives and referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and to the Committee on Agriculture.

If you want to read it, it can be found by going to the LOC Thomas website HERE

Enter the Phrase “H.R. 875: Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009and it should pop up in the list for you.  I’m still digesting it, especially in relation to small farmers, organic farmers, etc. However, my first inclination is that food should have a separate and distinct agency from that of medications and devices. This bill would accomplish that.

-Update-

Another three announcements just arrived. These include: C&K (Ray’s Markets), Allann Bros.,  and Theo Chocolate. Check the link below.

Between February 16h and today, another thirteen announcements from the FDA, have been published on peanut related recalls. These would be in addition to the 292 recalls I reported on the 16th. There are so many on this list, it really is better to go directly to the FDA website HERE, and scan the list for yourself. Do not complacently think you are unaffected if you only eat organic. There are some organic labels on this list.

In addition to candies, cheesecakes, butters, and plain peanuts, products like Slimfast, trail mixes and a large number of protein bars are included. Some products are listed because, while they did not contain peanuts, they were produced in factory conditions where peanuts were processed.

In the meantime, yet another reason to grow your own tomatoes has arisen this year.

Ok, I’m officially bored with the Blagojevich/Burris story. DiFi said and did the right thing, seeing as how she was running the Rules Committee till her recent switch to chair the Intelligence Committee. Obama isn’t part of the Legislative body, since he started over to the Executive branch and gave up his Senate Seat. So, The One can have one opinion, or the opposite, but he doesn’t get to decide. Reid stuck his neck out too early, and White is slipping and sliding. I don’t care. Another one who may have a legitimate gripe should have made a bigger stink earlier. Now, it just looks badly planned and icky.

Over.

Done.

Let him in and let’s get on with it.

Then, just now Illinois impeaches Blagojevich by a vote of 114 to one present vote. Doe everyone remember what that means?  Impeachment is an indictment, NOT conviction of wrongdoing.

Even the timing on that looks suspicious, because of Currie’s comments:

But he did not testify before the House impeachment committee and has not offered an explanation for the federal charges.

“His silence in this great matter is deafening,” said House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie, a Chicago Democrat.

Well, duh! If he is under federal investigation, he’s not going to go spilling his guts in the Illinois Senate. Whether the charges are true or not, that would be foolish. Does anyone think ALL who are pointing fingers and yelling “J’accuse!” are blameless and not using this event to get something? Just darn tiring how Democrats are chewing on each other. You got to ask yourself what’s the purpose and which rats will win.

Still bored.

And much more interested in whether women will get some rights back today.

-UPDATE-090106

It looks like the challange is on. Ron Coleman has filed suit challenging the contest. He is throwing an entire noodle bowl of points at the court in hopes something will stick, HERE.

Love him or hate him, it’s official! Except, it’s not quite. read the link. The “certification” will only stand if Coleman doesn’t challange.

-UPDATE-

The notice discussed below has since been superseded by another, so you will not see it at the bottom of my page. However, it is still on the FDA website. It’s website issuance date is still in question.

More Melamine found in wafer rolls, (cookies), Recalled from National Brands.

If you don’t know, make the jump and read the FDA notice in the “continue reading” below.

If you will notice at the bottom of my blogsite this notice is listed in the FDA website today, Jan. 5, 2009. However, the notice is dated for Issuance on December 19th. At least two blogs were aware of a notice from Associated Press this early: Salon.com and Boston.com. The notices may have been derived from the company’s site.  This is not the first time I have noticed a discrepancy in issuance date and notice date from the FDA.

Maybe there are simple and innocent answers for this gap. However, it’s clear that the FDFA did not issue a website national recall throughout the entire holiday season, even though they may have had the information. Someone did. Who benefited? What are we going to do about it?

Kudos to Salon.com, Boston.com and AP. Let’s hope all the wafers were distributed to your area, instead of nationwide, and returned.  Otherwise, some of us may be looking at a slightly more plastic life. I didn’t, but if I thought I had ingested some of this garbage, I would talk to my doctor; even if I  wasn’t sick. It never hurts hurt to establish a baseline. (more…)
