One PUMA’s thoughts about 2009

I do not have time to dally about whether the word “Feminist” is still correct. Suffice to say that I believe it is. That Governor Palin could call herself one, and Michelle Obama had trouble, shows the issue is not one of a leftist usurpation. Feminists right, left or in the middle, cannot cut off other feminists who support parallel position’s. Though I do not agree with Republican views of abortion, or their view of fiscal management or even their idea of care for the disadvantaged, I do find common ground on misogyny, and caucus fraud, election reform, and media bias.

Likewise, though I was outraged at NARAL’s actions, eventually upset with NOW, and disappointed by Steinem’s references to Palin, they are still democratic sisters. They made their best electoral choice. Most of their views are mine.

The problem, as I see it, is not our agreement; it’s how we got here, to this place, as PUMAs.  To move forward, we must focus; “keep our eyes on the prize”. Then, it’s the methods in how we move forward. (more…)

Humboldt County is one of the lesser-populated counties in California; at around 126,500 people. It doesn’t take many missing votes to realize something is amiss. If you thought the flap about voting irregularities had died down, and you haven’t read the BradBlog yet this week, trundle right on over there:

‘Humboldt Transparency Project’ Reveals Diebold, U.S. Federal E-Voting Scam

State certification of votes is to be final on December 13th, then, we will all know who really won the November 2008 elections, and by how much in California. When does your state certify?

As we have said before, don’t forget to ask if your neighbor wants a ride or needs a sitter. If they couldn’t make it to the caucuses, they really need to be heard.

Change the Caucus has produced testimony at the TDP hearings in Austin November 14th. They are, unfortunately, only in Video. However, if you have that capability, see:

Video: Tory Lauterbach Testifying at the TDP Hearing on the Primary-Caucus System in Austin.

Tory Lauterbach is president of the Texas College Democrats and a 24-year-old law student at the University of Texas at Austin. She testified to the committee in her personal capacity as a Texas Democrat.

Video of Jim Mattox Testifying Against the Texas Two-Step at Austin Hearing on November 14

November 21, 2008 by End the Texas Two Step

Five days before his death on November 19, Jim Mattox testified to the TDP Advisory Committee on the Convention/Caucus. He patiently waited more than two hours for his turn to speak. When his turn finally came, he strongly criticized the Texas Two-Step as an “unfair” system. The second part of his testimony contains some of his best points, so be sure to watch both parts.

Austin Chronicle Coverage of Austin Hearing on Two-Step

November 20, 2008 by End the Texas Two Step

[If the panel of Texas Democratic Party leaders gathered at the AFL-CIO hall last Friday wasn’t clear on what’s wrong with the party’s dual primary/caucus system, Amy Wright gave them a good visual to work with. It was a chair. She had to sit in the chair to give her testimony because of a devastating car wreck months earlier.

“February 16 was a pretty memorable day for me,” Wright told state Sen. Royce West of Dallas and a collection of county party chairs and other party dignitaries. “I spent the day at a party event learning about caucuses. … And then on the afternoon of February 16, I was involved in a pretty horrible car accident.” The tragedy left three people dead and Wright in Brackenridge….]

Austin Meeting of the TDP Advisory Committee on the Primary/Caucus

November 10, 2008 by End the Texas Two Step

Democrats in the Austin area will have the opportunity to participate in a TDP Advisory Committee Hearing on the Primary/Caucus system this Friday, November 14, 2008, in Austin at the AFL-CIO Building (at 1106 Lavaca Street Austin, TX 78701) at 10 AM.

The committee will be taking public testimony, so if you want to speak, when you get there, look for the yellow postcard size forms that they are using for people to sign in to testify. You can also fill out the form, if you just want to register that you are for or against the current system but do not want to speak. You can also bring written testimony and submit that to the committee. If you speak, you do not have to provide a written copy, but you can, since that will help the committee be able to re-read your testimony later. They seem to prefer that people do not read their testimony, but just speak to them as if you are talking to them one one one, but you can still submit a written version after you speak.

We Democrats were upset when Gore did not fight for his votes. Should we think less of McCain because he will? Are these even McCain’s votes, or is this bigger? If you believe disenfranchisement is occurring, should you not do something? Or, maybe you think this is just Republican game playing. (more…)
