Labor Day
Some of us are barbequing; others are having a little less fun:
The National Oceanic of Atmospheric Administration, (NOAA) runs the National Weather Service and they are keeping track of Gustaf, Hanna and ol’ Number Nine: HERE.

Animal rescue has authority to enter New Orleans with the other workers. This time animals are being evacuated with their people. Donate or volunteer if you can and adopt or foster an animal. Even if it’s not a hurricane survivor, your act makes room in the agencies for those that will come. Go to ARNO, and the SPCA.

The DNC spectacle was problematic. Setting aside the aggrandizement of the Chosen One, the underlying themes were troubling. In a recession, or near recession, with people losing their homes, many barely hanging on for years now, the cost and glitter seemed out of touch. I kept thinking of an old Jane Fonda movie, and book of the same name “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?”. The accomplishment of the hour was a sad counterpoint to the realities of our state of the nation. The exhortations of Kennedy, Clinton, Clinton and even Biden, the appeal to the base, the liberal, the Big Tent, ripped your heart out; yet found small foothold in the stage setting. It was not the Rose Garden; the garden begun by a woman, and the site of many a rapprochement. To me it looked like the stage had been planned as a metaphor to his intended triumph at the Brandenburg Gate. This theme, of the “manly” violent war/peace temple, appears to be more in character with Obama’s self image. It is further at odds with others image of him as the negotiator. It also reveals more about the misogyny of Obama. I doubt Clinton intended it in her WomenCount colors, but in this environment her perfect song was that of the caged canary.
It didn’t take Gustav to see how McCain would position himself against this frippery. McCain appears so much more the “Grown Up”. Hard, imperfect, maybe angry, McCain only has to be himself to be more appealing.

Worry about the future is everywhere, not just the Rust Belt. It’s clear that the Palin pick will resonate with many in the West:
