The government has halted distribution of Chinese-made butter, following the scandal of melanin-tainted Chinese milk powder.
The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said no milk products have been imported from any of the 22 problematic Chinese companies.
However, 182 tons of processed butter produced by another Chinese company has been imported, and the ministry says it will inspect the product and track its distribution.
Accordingly, the remaining stock in storage is temporarily banned from distribution and will be withdrawn from the market if found to be tainted.
Processed butter is made from the fat extracted from milk and is known to be added in small amounts when producing bread or ice cream.
