Heidi Li has a perspective on the recent blogger reported “Missouri Events”, wherein Obama “Truth Squads” are enlisted to come down on the persons who commit errors and misleading advertisements, with the weight of the law, and the Missouri Governor’s outraged response. Be sure and read her ‘here and here” links for background:
Of “Truth Squads” and fear of free speech: “Heed Their Rising Voices”
September 28, 2008
[….So, political ads can change the world. Apparently Senator Obama appreciates this. Hence the “truth squads” who, like the plaintiffs in Times v. Sullivan, will use law enforcement to shut down speech. (For discussion of the truth squads announced in Missouri look here and here.)
What Senator Obama seems to forget is the very high value our constitution places on political speech, even false political speech…]
Removed from the final draft, before the House vote today, was the noted provision below. For me, this is an example of how both Democrats and Republican have tried to push money and power into the pockets of non profits in the last eight years. However, one of the huge debates over the bail out, prior to it’s removal in draft bill, was in regard to this:
(The Politico) The ACORN issue is off the table.
After several days of rage from conservative activists regarding a provision in the bailout bill that would send some of the profits from the sale of distressed assets the government buys into an affordable housing trust fund, congressional negotiators have removed section 105(d) of the bailout proposal, according to aides on both side.
ACORN, a Democratic ally, was not specifically directed any funds in the previous proposal, but money that went to state and local governments could then have been divvied out to the organization, which the GOP said was a deal breaker. Fevered opposition to the provision had become a viral sensation.
It appears that, with the removal of the affordable housing trust fund, all of the proceeds from the sale of assets will now go to retire the debt.

Well, why should it apply just to newborns?
Nebraska ‘safe haven’ law for kids has unintended results
By Wendy Koch, USA TODAY
Between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday, three fathers walked into two hospitals in Omaha and abandoned their children. One left nine siblings, ages 1 to 17.The men, unless proven to have abused the kids, won’t face prosecution under a new Nebraska law that is unique in the nation. The law allows parents to leave a child at a licensed hospital without explaining why.

Another one bites the dust:
NY Sun folds tomorrow
September 29, 2008
The New York Sun will cease production after tomorrow’s issue, putting to rest rumors of whether or not it could be saved at the last minute. Two staffers told Politico that the final issue will come out on Tuesday, a fact now confirmed by a Sun spokesperson, who said there was no additional information available.
Launched in April 2002, the daily broadsheet focused intensely on local issues, and has been lauded for its arts coverage. The Sun also employs a few reporters in Washington, D.C, and has sent staff abroad to cover Iraq and other regions.
However, the Sun is probably best known — among supporters and critics — for its right-leaning, staunchly pro-Israel editorial page. But the paper never turned a profit, and editor-in-chief Seth Lipsky and managing editor Ira Stoll have been searching this month for investors to keep it afloat. That dream ended today.
A staff meeting is being held this afternoon. More details when available.
