Last day for sixteen states that I could find! Do you know any others?
October 6th is the last day to register to vote or update records for CA, KS, AZ, TX, GA, OH, PA, CO, FL, TN, AK, WI, MI, AL, and IN. Indiana’s last day is the 6th, but offices are closed. It appears you can still register on line HERE. For the rest of you going online might be your salvation as well. Start with your Secretary of State. Voting rules change from state to state. Check to see what they are online while you are there.
October 7th for IL
For OR, Oct 6th the last day for out of state ballots to be mailed.
As reported on Bill Moyers Journal last Friday as many as 39 states purged their voter roll between 2004 and 2006.

The League of Women Voters is concerned that the potential tsunami of voters this year will overwhelm polls. Volunteer to become a poll worker! We have discussed the need for poll monitors before, but its clear some states are going to disallow entry into the polling area. Puma Poll workers as neutral or third group influence would help to bring balance inside the polling area.

HERE is something to think about in preparation for the Tuesday Presidential Town Hall meeting. Project Vote Smart asks candidates about their postions. Unfortunately none of the candidates appear from the results to have availed themselves to Project Vote Smart since 2004. However, the older information provides an interesting foundation upon which to draw for the upcoming event.
For example, when Obama is asked various questions about abortion, he marks “other”. McCain’s answers on taxes are also interesting, and might be used as counterpoint to see how much has changed with the current economic crisis.
